Common Symptoms of Bone and Joint Disease

The majority of patients who seek treatment from specialists do so because they experience joint or back pain on movement, or pain in the legs on walking. In cases of herniated disc the patient may complain of pain in the back or thigh, as well as weakness or numbness in the legs.

Patients with less severe conditions, not requiring surgery, receive medication, physiotherapy, epidural steroid injections, or synthetic joint fluid injections into the knee or hip, as the case may require. Patients with more severe disorders, requiring spinal, arthroscopic or other specialised surgery or joint replacement can be assured that Piyavate's Bone and Joint Institute will provide the best facilities, treatment, and personal care available.

Understanding Causes and Treatment
The health and integrity of the body is one of the essential requirements for a full and satisfying life style. Life is always on the move, and the bones and joints are the foundation of movement. Therefore, any malfunction can severly degrade the quality of life. This may be a result of accident, including accidents in the course of sport and excercise, or be a consequence of aging. As always, prevention is better than cure; but, when treatment is necessary, the first step towards ensuring that treatment is safe, with the maximum probability of complete recovery, is choosing a hospital in which you can be confident. Here, Piyavate's Bone and Joint Institute is a Center of Excellence. It brings international standards of treatment within convenient and easy reach.
Scoliosis and other forms of degenerative joint disease may be a consequence of aging, and anyone over 55 should be on the watchout for them. But bone and joint problems can appear at any age and in any walk of life. Overweight or undue physical exertion can cause a herniated disk or other bone or tendon damage. Infections or spinal tumors can arise in an otherwise healthy and active person. An experienced specialist is needed to diagnose such problems and prescribe correct treatment.

Complete Specialized Services

Spinal surgery
In cases of a herniated disc, that is compressing nerves and causing discomfort or numbness, or of spinal stenosis, an expert surgeon can remove excess bone material. In some cases, spinal fusion may be necessary. Computer aided surgery, using a navigation system, will greatly improve the accuracy and safety of  spinal surgery. Under optimal conditions a patient can recover full motor skills within 2-3 days.

Hand and upper extremity surgery
Our Hand and Upper Extremity Surgery Unit provides services in hand, elbow and shoulder surgery, including minimally invasive procedures, such as arthroscopic wrist and shoulder surgery. Our physicians are certified in orthopedic surgery and have additional specialized qualifications in hand and shoulder surgery. Our service covers problems of the hand, wrist, forearm, elbow and shoulder, and also microsurgery.

Arthroscopic surgery
In accordance with the latest orthopedic techniques, our surgeons use a miniature (2-5 mm.) endoscope in order to be able to clearly visualize and evaluate the internal condition of a joint so as ensure precise reconstruction of joint ligaments and meniscus and cartilage repair. Arthroscopic surgery can be performed on the knee, shoulder, hip, ankle, elbow or wrist. The techniques employed require smaller entry wounds, with less pain and faster recovery than is the case with conventional surgery.

Joint replacement
Severe degeneration of cartilage can drastically impede movement, and persons afflicted may experience great pain, swelling, and joint effusion, seriously degrading the quality of life.  Our surgeons can thoroughly evaluate individual cases of cartilage degeneration so as to determine the appropriate treatment for each patient.
Piyavate Hospital is also fully equipped to diagnose and treat minor back pain, neck pain, and general joint disorders including bone and joint problems resulting from accidents and those occurring in children.
