Dengue vaccine (QDENGA)
It is the latest dengue vaccine developed using the backbone of dengue strain 2, which is the most prevalent strain in Thailand.
Type of vaccine: Qdenga vaccine is a live, attenuated vaccine produced and imported from Germany. The attenuated virus in the vaccine multiplies and stimulates the body to build immunity against the virus.
Vaccination: The injections will be given in the upper arm, spaced 3 months apart.
Advantages of the new dengue vaccine
- Prevents 80% of all four strains of dengue virus.
- It is 80% effective in preventing dengue fever overall.
- Prevents up to 90% of hospitalizations from dengue fever.
- It can be injected in people aged 4-60 years.
- It can be injected to both those who have and have not had dengue fever before.
- It is not necessary to have a blood test to test for dengue immunity before receiving the vaccine.
Things to know before getting the dengue vaccine
- Avoid getting vaccinated while you have a fever or are unwell.
- Avoid getting vaccinated while pregnant or breastfeeding.
- It is recommended to leave at least 4 weeks between vaccinations with other live vaccines.
- Common side effects include pain, bleeding, swelling and itching at the injection site, muscle pain, headache, and low-grade fever.
Recommendations for vaccination
- Get enough sleep, at least 7-8 hours, before receiving the injection.
- Avoid alcohol, tea, coffee, or energy drinks.
- On the day of vaccination, you should not have a fever or any illnesses such as diarrhea, allergic rash, etc.
- Avoid exercising at least 2 hours before vaccination and avoid exercising 1 day after vaccination.
- On the day of vaccination, you can eat, drink, and take your regular medication as usual.
- Inform the doctor of important information that should be known before vaccination, such as chronic diseases, history of drug or vaccine allergies, antiplatelet medications that cause abnormal bleeding, and other information that the doctor should know.
- Wear short-sleeved clothing for ease of vaccination.
